SA bill introduced

Today, independent Member of Parliament Tammy Franks introduced a bill in the South Australian Parliament to legislate a Duty of Care to young people and future generations to protect us from the impacts of climate change.

This landmark bill stands apart from the Federal bill, having been introduced in a different jurisdiction, but works to the same outcome. It recognises, again, what us as young people have long been saying - that our lives and futures must be legally protected, and that governments must be accountable for decisions that endanger our future by worsening climate change.

If passed, the bill would help shift climate decision-making away from short-term political interests and towards long-term responsibility, reflecting what we know of the reality of the climate crisis. It also sends a powerful message that protecting future generations must be a core obligation of governments and not an optional consideration.

We thank Tammy and her team for helping us take our fight to the South Australian parliament.
